How-To
Plant:
Because most seeds do not fair well when broadcast on an
unprepared seed bed, taking the proper steps of preparation will greatly
increase your success rate. Remember, Waterfowl Forage can be planted in water
or on dry ground, thus a prepared seed bed is not necessarily needed to achieve
a high success rate. Be sure to also look over our

Step 1: Soil Testing
You should test you soils pH level to check the acidity of the soil. If your
soil test between 0-6 (with 7 being neutral), as most soils will in North
America, you need to lime the soil.
Step 2: Liming
Lime should be applied during the fall months of
October or November to allow it to soak into the soil and again when you plant
in the spring. Your soil does not have to be broken to apply lime. If you need
help on figuring how much lime to use, let our Lime Calculator figure that out for you. All you need to know is the square footage
of your seed bed. Remember one acre equals 43,560 square feet.
Step 3: Discing
The soil should be broken up by discing or tilling.
Step 4: Planting
Sow your seed by drilling, broadcasting, or the
use of a cultipacker is an excellent method to cover seed. If you broadcast
your seed, try to plant shortly before a rainfall as this will aid in covering
your seed. As a general rule, you should plant just prior to or shortly after
an adequate rainfall to allow for a high germination rate of your seeds.
Step 5: Fertilizing
Fertilizer should be applied at the same time as
planting. BioLogic recommends using either 10-10-10 or 13-13-13 and applying
around 300 pounds per acre. Or, you can use BioLogic's pHFertilizer which
combines fertilizer and lime to provide your food plot with the
needed minerals for plant growth and the fast acting lime for the pH spike
during the growing season.
If you prepare your seed bed correctly you should experience a lush plot
which will allow you to attract and manage deer on you hunting property. |
